Have you ever considered building your own shed? It is a massive undertaking and before selecting your shed plans and attempting to begin the construction phase you need to ask yourself some serious questions.

First and foremost, what are the requirements of the shed? Will it be housing a car, garden tools or have you decided you just need a private space to escape to occasionally. With this simple question answered you should be able to get an idea of the least the size of the shed you are after and then you can begin researching the shed plans available to determine the style you are after. Make sure you think about access to the shed, does it require roller doors or hinged doors, will it be a powered shed or do you need to rely on natural light? In many areas your local council may need to approve a permanent structure being built on your property and this is quite often driven by the size of the new construction. There may also be a requirement to submit your shed plans to your local governing body for approval prior to starting.

Secondly, positioning of the shed. Determining where to begin construction of your shed will rely on a number of different factors. The following is not an exhaustive list but should get you thinking. Is access to the shed by vehicles require?. This is not just for storage of cars but also will there be a need for you to transport heavy equipment or materials to and from the shed. If your shed is to be powered it should be positioned where cabling can be run to it. The same applies if you want other services such as water or gas. Does the area have adequate drainage or will your shed be flooded by the first rain storm? If you are planning on making a bit of noise in your shed you should attempt to locate it in an area that will have a minimal disturbance for you neighbors. If the area has trees, are their root systems likely to affect your shed in the future? You should also make sure that your shed will not be blocking light to existing gardens or houses. If you are considering a concrete slab, will cement trucks have access to pour the base or will they have to use booms to get it over the top of another structure? Once your shed plans have been picked and your area has been earmarked then the following needs to be considered.

Materials. Any shed plans you follow will almost certainly have recommendations on specific wood types to use during construction. A bit of research about the types of wood available in your area will prove invaluable as the shed plans you have may be from someone in Australia who recommends using Jarrah, a wood which is specific to a certain area and may be unavailable or at least very expensive to purchase in your locale. Speak with lumber yards about suitable replacements ensuring that your decision isn’t purely money driven as this will be a structure you want to stand the test of time. Also think about the type of finish you would like. If your shed plans state that bricks will be required around the framing then your hands are tied with the exception of choosing the color. If on the other hand you are thinking of painting your shed, do you really need to use that perfectly finished hardwood, noting it’s grain will be forever hidden under layers of paint.

The final thing you should take into account is the financial cost. Whilst you may want space to hold four cars, does your budget allow for that? Whilst it isn’t necessary for you to purchase all of the materials required in one big hit, it should be taken into account what the total final cost is and a realistic view should be taken as to whether it is within your budget. If your selected shed plans do not include an estimate for material costs then, again, consult your local lumber yard with resource list in hand to get an idea of the total cost.

These are some of the bigger issues you will need to consider when sourcing your shed plans prior to commencing your project. There are a number of other factors which may affect you individually, the important thing is to carefully plan out your exact requirements before proceeding. Once you have made the decision to give woodworking a chance, one of the first steps you will need to take is to procure yourself some basic tool. I highly recommend in the first instance that you buy tools that are not necessarily at the top end of the price spectrum (you will probably want to make sure you like the craft first). Whilst the list provided below could be argued back and forth as to what is really required to start your woodworking hobby, from my perspective, it is an excellent starter’s kit and should have you happily producing your first wood furniture and more.

• Jack Plane (The most useful plane to start with. Further wood furniture projects will more than likely require more planes)
• Beech Mallet (Essential for joints and assembly)
• Pin Hammer (Good for fine work, heavier hammers will be needed later)
• Try Square (If funds allow for it, buy a combination square. Ensure the construction is sound as better quality will give better results)
• Marking Pencils (2H grade – hard enough to give a precise line, soft enough to be seen)
• Sliding Bevel (Any traditional design will do)
• Screwdrivers (Cross head and slot or use screw bits in your drill)
• File (A small range for small modifications to metal parts)
• Cramps (A small set of sash and g-cramps)
• Basic Cabinet Scraper (Essential for fine finishing on difficult timbers)
• Gooseneck Cabinet Scraper (As above)
• Chisel (A range of bevel-edged chisels – 6mm (1/4in), 12mm (1/2in), 25mm (1in) as a start)
• Marking Knife (I favor a traditionally sharpened blade versus those ground on one face only)
• Marking Gauge (Your first of many gauges if you decide to keep building wood furniture)
• Tenon Saw (A small tenon saw, back saw or large dovetail saw will be needed for fine work – 200mm (8in))
• Panel Saw (Cuts both solid timbers and manufactured boards)
• Coping Saw (Essential for curved cuts)
• Folding Plastic Rule (Excellent for workshop based wood furniture, use a steel tape for on-site work)
• Steel Rule (300mm (12in) long, don’t skimp on quality here)
• Small Cordless Electric Drill (A cheap drill is fine when starting out)
• Drill Bits (A range of twist, dowel and spade bits)

Not all of these tools may be required for the completion of your first wood furniture project so if you are not in a position to purchase all of them, check your woodworking plans to see which are absolutely essential. As you progress from basic wood furniture designs to the more complicated, you can add the required tools. Once you get a taste for woodcraft, begin purchasing better quality replacements for the above mentioned. You will also probably want to purchase more electric tools to reduce the time taken to produce your wood furniture. I highly recommend that even if you have the resources to head out and purchase router tables, mitre saws, electric planes, etc. that you first hone your skills using manual tools.

Finally, ensure that the woodworking plans you use are accurate and easy to follow. Even armed with the best quality tools, if your plans skip steps or assume you know how to move from one step to the next, without a decent understanding of the woodcraft you may find your wood furniture project going awry and your interest for woodworking disappearing.

For those starting out in woodwork I would recommend as one of your first projects that you build yourself a workbench. The reason, do you want to build all of your future projects on the floor? You may already have an existing workbench and it may even be eminently suitable for woodwork purposes and if that is the case you may not wish to read further. If you do not, then here are some tips that I can offer to help make sure your workbench will be a useful and long-lived part of your workshop.

The design of your bench will be dictated by a number of factors including the space you have available and the amount of funds you want to invest. Remember that a sound and sturdy workbench will have a direct impact on the quality of the woodwork projects that you build in years to come so using quality materials including the timber and fittings will be of ultimate importance. Once you have determined your work area and budget you will need to find a woodwork plan that meets your criteria. As a guide, a workbench height is usually between 800mm (32in) and 850mm (34in) although you will undoubtedly be able to modify your chosen plan to suit your individual requirements. I would also recommend that when scanning through plans that you look for a bench design that incorporates a ‘tool well’. This enables large pieces of work to be rotated around your table without tools being knocked Onto the floor. Of course a draw or shelf under the bench will achieve the same. You should use a plan which is concise, easy to follow and leaves no questions unanswered when it comes to the preparation, construction, assembly and finish of your bench. The paramount thing you must ensure is that after assembly and positioning, your worktop is level.

Once you have constructed your bench you should begin fitting it out with well-machined vices. Most woodwork specific benches will have both side and end vices fitted but, if you purchase and fit vices at different times, the most important is the main woodworkers vice. When it comes to these, bigger is better, and the more money you can spend to ensure large capacity and quality construction, the more versatile you will find it for projects in the future. The vice should be set as close as possible to one of the legs of the underframe to prevent any flexing of the worktop. You should also ensure that it is properly set into the bench so that when the vice cheeks are applied that no metal is showing and the top of the vice is flush with the top of the bench.

Temporary work benches can be used if you do not have the time, a future requirement for a permanent bench or if you are doing on-site work. Simple folding benches or saw horses, which you may have purchased to assist with the workbench construction, can be used or an existing table which has a strong design. All that is required then is to take a sheet of manufactured board 25mm (1in) thick and cut to a size about 150mm (6in) larger than your table (or benches or horses) all the way around. Fit some soft material to the underside if you don’t want to scratch the surface. On the working edge, place another strip of the same material, about 300-400mm (12-16in) and the same length as the base and glue it into place. If you are using horses or folding benches, you may need to place cross beams underneath to stop any drooping of your work surface. When done, clamp the work top to the base.

Your workbench should be well maintained to provide good, long-lasting use. A few basic tips for workbench maintenance are:

• Support your workpieces off the bench with padded strips or rubber mats,
• Place a layer of hardwood over your work surface which can be drilled and hammered and then replaced when it becomes damaged,
• Clean the work surface regularly,
• Only use clamps to secure pieces to your workbench,
• Use scrap material under workpieces when drilling,
• On occasion, check the surface level of your work bench with a spirit level and straight edge in case the wood has warped. Adjust with chocks as required or plane your bench.

Armed with these few simple tips, your woodwork bench should provide you with years of use.

After you have selected your wood plans, bought the materials and shaped them into what is required for successful completion of your project, you will get to the assembly stage. Any wood plans worth their salt will run you step by step through this area but if you are deciding to go it alone or, using plans that maybe aren’t up to scratch, here are some rough guidelines to help you finish your project.

If you decide to use nothing more than this piece of advice then I am happy – Dry fit all of your joints prior to gluing up! This simply means that you should fit all of your joints into the relevant other piece, IAW your wood plans, prior to using any kind of adhesive. The reason is that it’s the best method of finding any fitting problems that may arise which can then be solved before you have committed yourself to permanently attaching pieces together. As a beginner I made this error and, whilst it can be corrected, the frustration of hammering out a wonky wedged through mortise and tenon joint and damaging the tenon and the leg it was removed from, can easily be avoided by dry fitting and ensuring it is square prior to gluing.

Cramps are invaluable when it comes to assembly of your wood plans, the most commonly used type being the sash or bar cramp. Remember, when utilizing cramps, use wooden blocks between the work and the clamp’s shoes to prevent damaging the work surface. Wherever possible, once you have cramped your piece, check that it is square using a try square or measuring across the diagonals ensuring the measurements are the same on all sides. If your work is not square then an adjustment of the cramps to fully close the joint may be all that is needed, if not, disassemble your piece and check your wood plans cut lengths. Other cramps that you may also use for assembly are:

• G-Cramps – These come in an array of sizes and may have a deep throat for placing pressure away from the edge if needed,
• F-cramps – Quicker to apply than a G-cramp but apply less pressure due to their design,
• Quick-release cramps – As the name implies they are quick to attach and release but apply less pressure due to design. They also have a tendency to slip so may not be useful if the piece will be subject to vibration whilst cramped,
• Band Cramps – Also known as web or ratchet straps, these are particularly useful for curved work,
• Mitre Cramps – Used when cramping mitred corners such as picture frames.

Fasteners such as nails are rarely used except for mould and jig making. Screws on the other hand, are essential for your wood plans and you will find a massive selection available. They come in an array of metals with steel and brass being the most common for woodworking purposes. The most common types of screw heads available are:

• Countersunk Head – Sits flush or just under the timber surface allowing for the screw to be hidden with a filler,
• Round Head – Sits above the surface of the work and becomes a feature of the finished piece,
• Raised Head – A combination of the above two.

The slot types of screws are known as slot and cross-head. Slot screws use a flat-head screwdriver whilst cross-head screws use either Posidriv or Phillips head screwdrivers. You should try to avoid using Posidriv on Phillips screws and vice-verse as the subtle differences can mean damaging the screw and making it’s extraction, if necessary, very difficult. Cross-head screws provide greater grip than slot head and therefore have a lower chance of damaging the screw head. A couple more suggestions when using screws are:

• For brass screws, first insert an identical steel screw to cut the thread then remove this and insert your brass screw using a non-marking lubricant (Beeswax).
• Always drill pilot holes the width of your screws’ shank prior to inserting the screw. If you are using countersunk heads, countersink the surface with an appropriate sized piece.
• Do not over tighten the screw. A snapped head will leave you with the unenviable task of trying to retrieve the remainder of the screw with whatever metal is left for you to grip.

The final step in your wood plans assembly will be the gluing up. There is a fair range on the market and here is a list of the most common:

• Polyvinyl-Acetate (PVA) – Comes as a white liquid and can be used on joints and will achieve high standards of moisture and mechanical resistance,
• Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) – Comes in powder form requiring water to be mixed before use or as two liquids which are placed on opposing pieces to be joined. Again, high standards of moisture and mechanical resistance,
• Epoxy-Resin – Useful for joining different materials together and is ideal for external work. Not commonly used due to cost and general unsuitability for wood plans,
• Contact Adhesives – Are applied to opposing pieces until tacky and then joined together. Primarily used for applying laminates or when gluing fabrics,
• Cyanoacrylates – Almost instant glues whose thickness determines its curing times. These vary from 5 seconds through to a minute.

Before applying adhesives, ensure you have selected one which fits your wood plan taking into account drying time, moisture resistance and strength required. The normal process of gluing up will involve application of the glue and then cramping until the glue has cured completely. A little tip during this process is to allow the glue which gets squeezed out of the joint during cramping to become rubbery and then remove it with a chisel. This leaves much less residue on your piece than wiping wet glue with a cloth and much less damage than chiseling the fully cured glue.

Hopefully armed with these few tips you can finish up your wood plans with a little more ease.

Whether for attracting birds, for mark and recapture tracking or just for the love of woodworking, a bird house is an extremely popular choice for a first project. Also known as a nesting box, bird house design and size is limited only by your imagination. For those who are just starting out in woodworking you may prefer to consult woodworking plans to guide you on your way.

As you scan through the available projects, you will probably notice that most bird house plans have a similar design. A square or rectangular base, a sloping roof and hinged access point either in the top, sides or front. The size of the bird house that you choose should be driven either by the type of bird you are attempting to attract or the birds that frequent your area. A general rule is if you are trying to attract small birds then a smaller bird house is preferable. If it is larger species you are after then the size of the house will increase. Before searching for your bird house plans, ensure that you have done a small amount of research on the bird life that frequent your area.

It is quite important that the bird house plans you choose allow for a hinged access point to the interior. As a minimum you will require access to clean the inside following nesting season to remove the old nest material and any parasites that may be present. If you wish to use the bird house longer than one season, this step will have to be completed. If you are using the bird house for bird ringing or if it is for a domesticated species that you are breeding, you will also require access to the birds or their young.

The final positioning of your bird house will have to be considered seriously. To alleviate the problems of poor climate, predators and illness you should ensure the following:

• Choose bird house plans that have ventilation holes to circulate fresh air and don’t allow the box to become too hot.
• Position the opening away from direct sunlight or strong winds.
• Angle the birdhouse so that rain will not enter openings or, place it under an eave.
• Don’t use perches, birds don’t need them but predators can use them.
• Make the opening in the bird house the size for the species you are after. If it is too large then predators may get access.
• Position it away from brush but close to plants.
• Choose colors that blend with the bird house’s surrounds.
